HISTORY:

The Castle at Ballytarsna was constructed by Sir William Hackett as a home for his family during the late 15th century.

The Castle remained occupied until the year 1655 when the Hackett family were ousted by the British Parliamentarian forces during the ‘Wars of the Three Kingdoms’.

It was during this brutal conflict that the castle fell into disrepair and subsequently had remained in a derelict condition until modern times.

The extensive restoration process to the Castle was undertaken by the  previous owner over a eleven-year period which commenced during the late 1990′s.

It has taken huge skill, knowledge and dedication by the vendors and their craftspeople to recreate this magnificent piece of Historic architecture in it’s serene rural setting.

Stairs

The castle has three flights of stairs – both spiral and straight mural stairs, all of limestone and forming an integral part of the structure. There are 55 steps in total. The stairs survive all the way to the walkway at the original roof level of the castle.

Renovations

The wall tops were consolidated in their current state and a new metal guard rail was constructed on the North West corner. A new glazed roof was concealed behind the existing parapets and lead flashing was used to weather the wall walks. This glass roof gives diffused light to the main living area on the second floor. A new floor was put in on this level over the original vault.

On the first level, a new Oak floor was put in on the existing wall corbels to create a bedroom. There is a WC on both the first and second floors in the existing mural passages New bronze casement windows were inserted to all existing openings. The renovations have been done in a manner that has retained the building’s historic character, integrity and charm.

Loughaderry  lake and wildlife reserve and the parish church of St. Colemans are less than half a mile to the North East.

Fota House, Arboretum and Wildlife Park,  15 mins drive and well worth a visit.

Gregan Castle, dating from 1588, is a beautifully renovated and extended Historic Irish Castle, presented for sale in excellent decorative order, and located in an area of outstanding scenic beauty

on the edge of the world famous Burren, County Clare.

The castle is approached via gates off a country road, and stands proud amongst c 20 acres of well tended woodland and shrubs.

Surrounded by a bawn wall, unique in its privacy, the outline appears little changed for most of five hundred years.

In the second half of the Seventeenth century parts of the bawn walls were breached by Cromwellian soldiers,  they remained unrepaired for over three hundred years,

until the property came into the ownership of the vendors, who set about the mammoth task of repair and regeneration.

The Castle itself dates from 1588, replacing an earlier 13th century building. Records show that by the 16th century the property was owned by  the O Loughlin Family.

In the 17th century, their property with its extensive lands was granted to the Martins, whose better lands had been confiscated.

The Martins, who were Catholics, owned  the property until the 1960′s.

At that stage, the castle had been a ruin for over 200 years. The antiquarian, Massy-Westropp completed some sketches of Gregan Castle in it’s ruinous state, about 1895.

The castle is located in the Burren, a glacial valley which runs east into the larger valley which lies between Ballyvaughan and the Corkscrew Hill.

The work of restoring the Castle began in the 1990′s. 

The approach has been to carefully respect the surviving fabric, but to adapt the Castle for today’s needs.

The grounds, beautifully laid out with stands of a variety of trees, are sheltered from the westerly winds blowing in from the Atlantic.

This, and slightly warmer winters, encourage the trees and shrubs to flourish.

The glacier, from some twenty thousand years ago, left a moraine, which provides shelter for wildlife, both animals and birds.

Sometimes small herds of inquisitive wild goats come down from the higher ground.

There are many delightful walks through the trees and grounds.

Grantstown Castle, Kilfeacle, Co. Tipperary, Ireland:

Grantstown Castle,  A superb example of a renovated 16th Century Tower House, ascending 22 metres in height,  located on a gently rising hill in the middle of the fertile Golden Vale in County Tipperary.

The castle is surrounded by three solid, half-timbered structures, built in medieval (or “Tudor”) manner,

using heavy beams, burnt bricks, lime plaster and antique roofing slates. All joints between the beams are executed in the traditional carpentry techniques.

Each of the three cottages was built during the last 15 years.

The castle and outbuildings are standing on about 2 acres of garden

and meadow land surrounded by some mature, native trees.

The meadows adjoining to an original, romantic limestone quarry from the 1500′s to the east which also belongs

to the property. This almost certainly supplied the stone to build the castle.

An antique iron gate hinged on two delicate, hexagonally-shaped limestone pillars forms the road frontage to a quiet country road.

The setting is close to spectacular: In southern direction there are views of the Galtee Mountains including

Galtymore, the third-highest mountain in Ireland (919 metres) and the adjoining, romantic Glen of Aherlow.

The wild Silvermine Mountains form the other side of the Golden Vale in the north. There is a clear, distant view of the

famous Rock of Cashel, seat of the Kings of Munster from the 4th century, in eastern direction.

The famous Athassel Priory (founded in 1200) on the banks of the beautiful river Suir, the largest and most

picturesque ruined abbey in Ireland, is only 5 kilometres away.

The important motte of Kilfeacle, one of the first Norman wooden castles ever built in Ireland (approx.  in 1185)

is only 4 kilometres away. And there are four other neighbouring castles to see from the battlements of Grantstown Castle including

Thomastown Castle, now in ruins, once famous under the title: “Versailles en miniature” and

the rare example of a round castle: The ruined tower of Ballysheedy, the principal seat of the well-known O’Dwyer clan.

Only 5 kilometres in north-western direction you find one of Ireland’s most elegant and best known country hotels: The beautiful Dundrum Manor House Hotel dating from 1730. Its picturesque golf course is one of the most well-tended ones in Ireland and also one of the best kept secrets.

Shannon Airport to the west is exactly 1 hour away by car. Cork Airport to the south is exactly 1 hour and 10 minutes

Clonbrock House ( in ruins) is offered for sale with approx 20 acres of grounds with two-storey rendered outbuildings forming a courtyard to rear,

Clonbrock House was designed by William Leeson for Robert Dillon, the 3rd Baron Clonbrock, and constructed from 1780-1788 to replace the old castle which stood on the site.

It remained in the possession of the Dillon family for almost 200 years until it was sold in 1976.

A fire blazed through the house in 1984, destroying the intricately detailed interior.

Though now ruined, this impressive historic Irish Mansion stands proud, overlooking extensive verdant countryside.

The high level of design and craftsmanship is evident in the remaining fabric, such as the ornate entrance porch and the finely tooled stone window surrounds.

It is an important part of the social and architectural heritage of the area.

Clonbrock House ( in ruins) presents as a detached eight-bay three-storey over basement country house, built c.1790, with a square plan with three-bay pedimented breakfront, Doric entrance porch which was added c.1824, and a three-storey over basement single-bay extension with parapet roof and brick cornice to north-west, a single-storey bow-ended wing to south-east added c.1855, and two-storey wing to north-west.

Ruled and lined lime rendered façade. The Porch, accessed by four stone steps, has carved stone entablature with triglyph and metope detail and moulded cornice with dentils above, supported on four fluted Doric columns.

Ballindooley Castle is a familiar sight to many Galwegians, and indeed since its construction in  the late 15th Century many  travellers and visitors to Galway would have been enchanted by its most striking silhouette on their approach to the city. The castle is presumed to have been built in the late 15th century (approximately 1480). It is a Norman castle and was probably built by the DeBurgo Family.

The first written record of ownership was to a Redmond Regough Burke. To the south west of the Castle lies Ballindooley Lake. It had the distinction of being shelled by the British Gunboat ” Helga” during the 1916 Rising to disband rebels who were supposed to be gathered there to march on the city.

Another suggestion is that it may have been the HMS Gloucester and not the Helga at all.

The Castle would have been probably used as a ” guest castle” by the Burke Family, one of the ancient tribes of the city of Galway; Striking, dramatic; this noble fortress was purchased a ruin 22 years ago by a Chicago Attorney with links to the West of  Ireland. Previous to this, the Castle had stood vacant and ruinous, for about two hundred years.

Carrignacurra Castle was probably built around 1575 to defend a ford across the River Lee about 1.5 km east (downstream) of Inchigeelagh village and would have been an O Leary Castle.


The name, Carrignacurra, probably comes from Carraig na Choradh – Rock of the weir. There was an eel weir on the River Lee here in 17th century.
