The rooms are furnished with an abundance of Irish Art from the Lissadell Collection including paintings by David Overend, Douglas Alexander, Wycliffe Egginton and Bingham Mc Guinness.

The plinth in front of the house, with its adjoining lawn, stretches over 140 ft. There are five seating areas surrounding the house, all of which are available for whatever mood suits you:

seclusion by the sea to write your memoirs, compose poetry, gather your thoughts, or simply relax.

You have views across Drumcliffe Bay to Knocknarea, burial place of the legendary Queen Medb of Connaught, famous warrior Queen, and to Rosses Point and Strand Hill.

Our visitors have pedestrian access to all the grounds across the Estate, including the Alpine Gardens.

The views from every single room in ‘Lissadell on the Sea’ are spectacular.

A grass slope leads up to a woodland setting behind and to the West of the house, and will take you to the old lookout Tower from which the Gamekeeper in Lissadell maintained a watch over the rabbits bred in the Burrows, which were a valuable part of the Estate in the 18th and 19th Centuries.

Behind ‘Lissadell on the Sea’ is the historic Agent’s House, now in the course of restoration.

A special viewing area measuring over 1,000 sq ft has been constructed to the rear of the house providing an elevated view of sea and mountains on all sides.

Raised Breakfast Patio overlooking Drumcliff Bay and adjacent to the Secret Garden.

There is a delightful sunspot, created from specially selected Kilkenny flamed limestone flags.

Kilkenny Limestone is a tradition at Lissadell, as the floors in the Mansion House entrance Hall, and the imperial Staircase, are constructed from Kilkenny Marble  (polished limestone).

The windows, which were specially commissioned from Breffini Heritage in Leitrim, are made of mahogany, specifically treated to withstand Atlantic gales.

Each window is a picture window, which allows for spectacular views from every room. You will feel like you are living in an Oil painting.

In pride of place in the Kitchen/ Dining Room is the beautiful Lacanche Range, ordered for the house from Burgundy in France.

The Kitchen is equipped with Smeg and Miele domestic appliances and elegant pottery from Portmerion in Wales. Directly outside is a beautiful Kilkenny limestone flagged Breakfast Patio.

Located adjacent to the walled Victorian Kitchen Garden created for the Gore Booth family as a vegetable, herb and fruit garden in the 1840s,

The Garden House at Lissadell was built by Sir Robert Gore-Booth in the 1860s for the use of the head gardener to the Lissadell Estate.

When Edward Walsh and Constance Cassidy acquired Lissadell, it was Eddie who discovered this sleeping gem under acres of undergrowth: the Garden House slumbered, like the secret garden which surrounds the House, for at least five decades, until released from enchantment by Eddie, almost singlehandedly as to the surrounding gardens and sun terrace.

The Garden House is one of the oldest houses on the Lissadell Estate and was the home and headquarters of the Head Gardener, who superintended a huge amount of work and employees needed to service an estate of 32,000 acres and a home farm in excess of 4,000 acres, and the requirements of the Gore- Booth family who lived in Lissadell House.

What we have sought to achieve is the decoration of this house in the Victorian style, but also paying homage to the later Bloomsbury Group era, as many of this set were friends contemporaries of Countess Markievicz, formerly Constance Gore-Booth.

The decorations include light fittings by Tiffany: Louis Comfort Tiffany founded the Tiffany Glass and Decorating Company in 1885.  Tiffany drew inspiration from ancient roman glass when creating coloured glass designs without the use of paint or enamel.  Many of the most popular Tiffany lamp designs resemble trees, with the detailed bronze bases, stands and shades representing the roots, trunks and canopy.  Many of the shades also feature a regularly shaped or scalloped edging to further resemble things like flower petals, insect wings and other natural forms.

Eddie and Constance also pay homage to the particular situation of the Garden House adjacent to the Victorian Kitchen Garden created by Sir Robert Gore-Booth in the 1840s and also to the newly created garden, planted by Eddie, in the old secession beds, which also functioned as the base of the ancient glass houses.

Tiffany lighting was designed, manufactured, and became popular before and during the Bloomsbury Group Era when Constance Markievicz mixed and mingled with artists, poets and other luminaries in the early 1900s, when studying art at the Slade.  The Bloomsbury set included writers, intellectuals, philosophers and artists such as Virginia Woolf, William Morris, Rennie Mackintosh, Æ, Althea Gyles, Oscar Wilde, Dante Rossetti, E.M. Forster, Lytton Strachey, Clive Bell, John Maynard Keynes, Leonard Woolf, Stephen Tomlin, Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant amongst others.

ACCOMMODATION:

The magnificent Master Bedroom

has views over the old secession houses, and the new garden created within those beds, which adjoin the Victorian walled garden.

The Two further Douuble Bedrooms enjoy fabulous views towards Drumcliff Bay.

TheOpen Plan  Kitchen / Dining room

is a lovely large airy space: in pride of place is the Lacanche premium-range stove, a must for all serious cooks.

The Luxurious Study and  Living room have open fireplaces,

which create the perfect relaxed atmosphere.

The house is in a beautiful setting and surrounded with separate lawn areas, a 3,000 sq.ft. sun terrace which is a veritable suntrap, and highlighted by the Donegal gravel quartz drives.

The wallpapers and blinds/curtain material that you will see are from designs by William Morris (1834 – 1896) who had a profound influence on interior decoration throughout the Victorian period.

The paintings in the Garden House are from the Lissadell Art collection assembled by Edward Walsh, including paintings by Dante Rossetti, Seán McSweeney, T.P. Flanagan, Mark O’Neill and David Overend.

The entire of the house, both exterior and interior, is painted in colours from the Farrow and Ball Heritage range.

The magnificent Celtic knot stain glass windows were designed by Enda Clarke of Gecko Glass in Rathcormac, Co Sligo, and inspired by Leonard Cohan, the great singer -songwriter who played at Lissadell in 2010.

Eddie, Constance and Constance Elisabeth Jnr have been involved in every detail of the design for this beautifully restored comfortable house. Eddie singlehandedly created the marvellous new rose garden and beautiful flower beds all surrounding the house

Private access to the Lissadell Strand is a short walk through the Estate.

The heating is a combination of electrical and infrared, especially commissioned for the house by PowerRite.

As the fireplaces are very small, we recommend that you put no more than two appropriately sized logs in the fire basket.

The property lies About 2.5 km ( 6 min drive) distant from Clare Island Pier, and was purchased by the present owners in 2012, who then set about a substantial and well thought out sustainable renovation and extension of superior design and execution.

Details of The Cottage Extension and Restoration: ( Planning Permission Ref; 14/474)

Using traditional craftsmanship, the restoration included drainage installation using volcanic chips ( lecce pebbles) as insulation which were put in layers of myplex. The Brazilian slate flooring was laid in lime mortar, and all cement was removed from the old cottage and replaced with lime mortar. In the old cottage all walls were coated with a thick hemp and lime mix, and finished off with a lime silka mix.

During the renovations the owners removed the plasterboard and found a wall that was thought to be the original wall. They contracted the Chief Conservator of the Medieval Abbey on Clare Island, Christoph Oldenbourg to preserve the wall. He estimated that the paint and plaster he preserved was from early 1900.

The extension was made from poroton self insulating blocks and then externally rendered in lime mortar in sympathy with the old cottage. Front windows are single glazed hand made from reclaimed pitch pine, with shuttering. All other windows are double glazed.

The restored Danish Log Burner was kept to support additional heating, as needed. The roof was replaced with natural slate, and insulated fully. A French drain was created surrounding the cottage below the water table. This has a dramatic effect on the atmosphere in the cottage. No more damp or salt deposits as the cottage dried out naturally over two years.

This is a cleverly designed and beautifully executed sustainable renovation, sure to create significant interest on the open market.

THE ACCOMMODATION: ( 93 sq. m.)

The floors throughout the entire property (excluding bathrooms) are Brazilian slate, chosen to maximise heat retention so they heat up during the sunshine and slowly release heat.

The owners recycled the hardwood boxes the slates arrived in as bathroom and utility room cabinets.

HISTORY:

The Castle at Ballytarsna was constructed by Sir William Hackett as a home for his family during the late 15th century.

The Castle remained occupied until the year 1655 when the Hackett family were ousted by the British Parliamentarian forces during the ‘Wars of the Three Kingdoms’.

It was during this brutal conflict that the castle fell into disrepair and subsequently had remained in a derelict condition until modern times.
